cachexia

Disease-caused muscle loss

Cachexia is a severe wasting syndrome characterized by extreme weight loss, muscle atrophy, and weakness that cannot be reversed by simply eating more.

It typically accompanies serious chronic illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, heart failure, or kidney disease.

Unlike ordinary malnutrition, cachexia involves metabolic changes that cause the body to break down its own tissue.

The cancer patient's cachexia left him too weak to walk.
