endangerment
Putting at risk
Endangerment is the act of putting someone or something at risk of harm, injury, or destruction.
The term appears most often in legal contexts, where it describes conduct that creates danger for others: She was charged with child endangerment after leaving her kids alone in a hot car.
Reckless endangerment typically involves behavior that shows disregard for the safety of others, even without intent to harm.
The word also applies to species threatened with extinction, as in the Endangered Species Act.
