search area
Where investigators look
A search area is a defined region where efforts are concentrated to find something—a missing person, downed aircraft, lost vessel, or other target.
The term appears most often in rescue operations and investigations: Coast Guard helicopters expanded the search area after debris was spotted.
Search areas may be gridded for systematic coverage or adjusted as new information emerges.
