A rough cut is an early version of a film or video assembled before fine editing, color correction, and sound mixing: The rough cut ran three hours before they trimmed it.
The term extends to any preliminary version of creative work.
Separately, rough cut describes lumber sawn but not planed smooth, retaining a coarse surface texture.
