first pass
Preliminary run-through
A first pass is an initial attempt at something, with the expectation of refinement later.
The term comes from manufacturing and machining, where multiple passes over material produce the final result.
In common use, it describes preliminary work: This draft is just a first pass—I'll clean it up tomorrow.
A first pass catches major issues before finer adjustments.
