rock salt

Coarse winter mineral

Rock salt is salt in its natural, coarsely crystalline form, extracted from underground deposits rather than evaporated from seawater.

It's commonly spread on icy roads and sidewalks to lower the freezing point of water: The city trucks spread rock salt before the storm.

Rock salt also appears in ice cream makers and as a cooking presentation for oysters and other shellfish.
