road roller

Heavy asphalt compactor

A road roller is a heavy construction vehicle with large cylindrical drums instead of wheels, used to compact soil, gravel, or asphalt during road building and paving.

The weight of the machine, concentrated through its smooth or ridged drums, flattens and densifies surfaces to create a stable foundation.

The road roller made several passes over the fresh asphalt before it cooled.

Also called a steamroller, though modern versions are diesel-powered rather than steam-driven.
