foundation work
Structural support preparation
Foundation work is the construction activity involved in building the base or substructure that supports a building or other structure.
This includes excavation, pouring concrete footings, installing piers or pilings, and waterproofing—all the labor that happens below ground level before visible construction begins.
The term also applies figuratively to preliminary efforts that establish the basis for later development: We spent months doing the foundation work before launching the initiative.
