Augsburg

German textile center

Augsburg is a city in Bavaria, southern Germany, one of the country's oldest, founded by the Romans.

It rose to prominence as a medieval trading center and became associated with the Fugger banking dynasty.

The Peace of Augsburg (1555) allowed German princes to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism for their territories.

The Augsburg Confession (1530) remains a foundational Lutheran document.
