red brick
Clay building block
Red brick is brick made from clay with high iron content, which oxidizes during firing to produce the characteristic reddish color.
It's the most common type of brick in many regions, giving whole neighborhoods their visual identity.
As an adjective, red-brick describes buildings made of this material, and in British English, a red-brick university is one founded in the industrial era, as opposed to the older stone-built institutions like Oxford and Cambridge.
