blue glow

Sapphire-colored light emission

Blue glow refers to the pale blue light emitted by certain phenomena—most notably Cherenkov radiation in nuclear reactors, where particles exceed the speed of light in water.

The phrase also describes the light from screens in dark rooms: The blue glow of laptops illuminated the lecture hall.

In older usage, it named the faint luminescence of gas discharge tubes.
