pump-jet

Enclosed watercraft propulsion

A pump-jet is a marine propulsion system that draws water through an intake, accelerates it with an impeller, and expels it through a nozzle to generate thrust.

Unlike exposed propellers, the mechanism is enclosed within the hull, reducing drag and protecting against debris.

Pump-jets power personal watercraft, ferries, and military vessels where maneuverability or stealth matters: The submarine's pump-jet made it nearly silent.
