sternwheel

Boat's back paddle

A sternwheel is a large paddle wheel mounted at the stern of a boat, used for propulsion.

Sternwheel steamboats were the classic vessels of American rivers in the 19th century, their single rear-mounted wheel distinguishing them from sidewheelers: The sternwheel churned the muddy water as the boat pushed upstream.
