public intellectual
Ideas for everyone
A public intellectual is a scholar, writer, or thinker who addresses issues of broad social concern for general audiences rather than specialists alone.
The term implies someone who brings expertise from a particular field—philosophy, history, science—to bear on political or cultural questions in accessible forums: Noam Chomsky became a public intellectual through his political commentary, not his linguistics.
The label can be aspirational or mildly pejorative, depending on whether the speaker values or distrusts such figures.
