talking head

On-screen expert

A talking head is a television shot framed tightly on a person speaking directly to camera, showing little beyond head and shoulders.

The term often carries dismissive connotations—pundits and commentators reduced to disembodied faces offering opinions: The news is just talking heads shouting at each other.

It can describe anyone who speaks without substance or action behind their words.
