compartment syndrome
Muscle space crisis
Compartment syndrome is a painful and dangerous condition in which pressure builds within a closed muscle compartment, restricting blood flow and potentially causing tissue death.
It typically follows trauma, fractures, or crush injuries.
Acute compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency requiring fasciotomy—cutting open the tissue covering—to relieve pressure before permanent damage occurs.
