counter-steering

Steer against intuition

Counter-steering is a technique for turning motorcycles and bicycles at speed by briefly pushing the handlebar in the opposite direction of the intended turn.

To turn right, you push the right handlebar forward, which tips the bike left and initiates a rightward lean.

The technique feels counterintuitive but becomes automatic with experience: Once you learn to counter-steer, you realize you've been doing it unconsciously all along.
