direct fire
Visible target engagement
Direct fire is gunfire aimed at a target the shooter can see, with the projectile traveling in a relatively flat trajectory to the point of aim.
This contrasts with indirect fire, where weapons like mortars or artillery arc projectiles toward targets beyond the shooter's line of sight.
The infantry squad laid down direct fire while the mortar team set up.
