poteen
Illicit Irish spirit
Poteen is illicitly distilled Irish whiskey, traditionally made from potatoes or grain in small, hidden stills to avoid taxation.
The word comes from Irish Gaelic for "little pot," referring to the small copper pot stills used.
Also spelled poitin.
They passed around a jar of poteen by the fire.
