pollaxe
Medieval combat weapon
Pollaxe is a variant spelling of poleax, a medieval weapon combining an axe blade, hammer, and spike on a long shaft—used primarily against armored opponents.
The spelling with double L reflects the weapon's function of striking the poll (head).
As a verb, to pollaxe someone is to knock them down or stun them completely: The news pollaxed him.
