pollarding

Cutting tree crowns

Pollarding is a pruning technique where the upper branches of a tree are cut back to the trunk, encouraging dense new growth at that point.

The practice keeps trees at a manageable size while producing a regular harvest of small-diameter wood for fuel, fencing, or basketry.

Pollarded trees develop distinctive knobbly heads where the cuts are made, and the technique can extend a tree's lifespan considerably.

The willows along the canal are pollarded every few years.
