poach

Cook in liquid

Poach has two unrelated meanings.

To poach an egg is to cook it gently in simmering liquid—the white sets around the yolk without a shell.

Fish and chicken are also poached.

The other poach means to hunt or fish illegally, taking game from protected land or out of season.

By extension, to poach is to take what rightfully belongs to another: They poached our best engineers, He's poaching clients from his former firm.
