broil

Cook under flames

To broil is to cook food by exposing it directly to intense heat, typically from above in an oven.

The method produces quick browning and charring: Broil the steaks for four minutes per side.

Broil also means to become extremely hot: We broiled in the summer sun.

In British English, the cooking term is grill rather than broil.
