ploughing

Breaking ground mechanically

Ploughing is the act of turning over soil with a plough to prepare land for planting.

The work is slow and methodical, which gives rise to figurative uses: to plough through a book is to read it steadily; to plough on is to persist despite difficulty.

In British slang, ploughing can mean having vigorous sex.
