direct seeding
Sowing without transplanting
Direct seeding is planting seeds straight into the ground where they'll grow, rather than starting them in containers and transplanting later.
The method saves labor and avoids transplant shock but requires good soil conditions and weed control.
In forestry, direct seeding scatters tree seeds over cleared land instead of planting nursery-grown seedlings: Direct seeding proved cheaper but less reliable than transplanting.
