rototilling

Mechanized ground breaking

Rototilling is the process of breaking up and turning soil using a rototiller—a motorized gardening machine with rotating blades that churn earth to prepare it for planting.

The technique loosens compacted soil and mixes in amendments: We spent Saturday rototilling the vegetable garden.

Also called rotary tilling.
