plage
Côte d'Azur sand
Plage has two distinct meanings.
In astronomy, a plage is a bright region on the sun's surface, typically near sunspots, visible in certain wavelengths of light.
In French-speaking regions and sometimes in English travel writing, plage simply means beach: We spent the afternoon at the plage.
