letterspacing

Gaps between letters

Letterspacing is the adjustment of horizontal space between letters in a line of text.

Designers increase letterspacing to improve readability of uppercase text or create an airy, elegant feel; they decrease it to tighten headlines or logos.

Also called tracking, though some distinguish tracking (uniform adjustment across text) from kerning (adjustment between specific letter pairs).

The letterspacing on that sign makes it hard to read.
