photoplay

Early cinema feature

Photoplay is an early 20th-century term for a motion picture, used when film was a new medium and vocabulary for it was still forming.

The word emphasized the dramatic or theatrical aspect of movies: a photoplay in five acts.

It survives mainly in the name of the fan magazine *Photoplay*, published from 1911 to 1980.
