field corn

Grain for cattle

Field corn is the variety of corn grown primarily as animal feed, for ethanol production, or for processing into corn syrup, starch, and other industrial products.

Unlike sweet corn, it's harvested after the kernels have dried and hardened on the stalk.

Most corn acreage in the United States is field corn, not the tender ears people eat directly.
