parametric equation

Variable-driven curve description

A parametric equation defines a curve or surface by expressing each coordinate as a function of one or more independent variables called parameters.

Instead of relating x and y directly, both are given in terms of t: x = cos(t), y = sin(t) traces a circle as t varies.

Parametric equations handle curves that loop back on themselves or have vertical segments—situations where standard equations fail.
