hyperboloid
Curved cooling tower
A hyperboloid is a three-dimensional surface generated by rotating a hyperbola around one of its axes.
The resulting shape curves inward like an hourglass when rotated around the conjugate axis (hyperboloid of one sheet) or forms two separate curved surfaces facing each other when rotated around the transverse axis (hyperboloid of two sheet).
Architects favor hyperboloid structures for cooling towers and observation decks because the shape provides exceptional strength while using minimal material.
