paraffins

Saturated hydrocarbon compounds

Paraffins are waxy, solid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum, used in candles, cosmetics, and waterproofing.

The term also refers to a class of saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) in chemistry.

In British English, paraffin means kerosene—the liquid fuel for lamps and heaters: The heater runs on paraffin.
