penetrating oil

Bolt-freeing fluid

Penetrating oil is a low-viscosity lubricant designed to seep into tight spaces—particularly rusted or seized mechanical parts.

It works by capillary action, creeping between threads and into microscopic gaps to loosen corroded bolts, hinges, and other stuck metal components: I sprayed some penetrating oil on the lug nuts and let it sit overnight.

WD-40 is the best-known brand, though specialized formulations exist for severe corrosion.
