papal conclave
Elects the pontiff
A papal conclave is the assembly of Roman Catholic cardinals who gather to elect a new pope.
The cardinals meet in sealed seclusion at the Vatican—the term comes from a Latin word meaning "with a key"—and vote until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority.
White smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney signals a successful election; black smoke means voting continues.
