paddlewheels

Steamboat rotating blades

Paddlewheels are large wheels fitted with boards or paddles around their circumference, mounted on the sides or stern of a boat.

As the wheel rotates, the paddles push against the water to propel the vessel forward.

Paddlewheel steamboats dominated American river transportation in the 19th century: The old paddlewheeler churned up the Mississippi.

Also spelled as two words: paddle wheels.
