osteonecrosis

Dead bone tissue

Osteonecrosis is the death of bone tissue due to insufficient blood supply.

Without adequate circulation, bone cells die and the affected area may eventually collapse.

The condition most commonly affects the hip, knee, and shoulder joints: The patient developed osteonecrosis after prolonged steroid use.

Also called avascular necrosis.
