oracle bones
Ancient Chinese scapulae
Oracle bones are pieces of turtle shell or animal bone used in ancient China for divination.
Questions were inscribed on the surface, then heat was applied until cracks appeared; diviners interpreted these cracks as answers from ancestors or spirits.
The inscriptions on oracle bones represent the earliest known form of Chinese writing, dating to the Shang dynasty (roughly 1600–1046 BCE).
