oom-pah

Polka band sound

Oom-pah is the rhythmic bass-and-chord pattern characteristic of brass band music, especially German and polka styles—the tuba plays a low note on the beat while higher instruments hit chords on the offbeats.

The term imitates this sound: an oom-pah band at the beer hall.

As an adjective, it describes anything with that bouncy, festive quality.
