oilrigs
Marine extraction structures
Oil rigs are large structures used to drill for petroleum, either on land or offshore.
The offshore variety—platforms standing in open water or floating vessels—dominate the popular image: Workers spend weeks at a time on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
The term encompasses both the drilling equipment and the platform that supports it.
