boundary conditions
Limits defining solutions
Boundary conditions are constraints or requirements that define the limits of a problem or system.
In mathematics and physics, they specify values at the edges of a domain—determining, for instance, how a vibrating string behaves at its fixed endpoints.
The term extends to any field where solutions depend on what happens at the boundaries: We need to establish the boundary conditions before modeling the heat flow.
Figuratively, boundary conditions can mean the parameters within which something must operate: The budget and timeline are our boundary conditions.
