second-order

Effect of effect

Second-order describes something that operates at a remove from the primary level—an effect of an effect, a consequence of a consequence.

In logic and mathematics, second-order systems can quantify over sets or properties, not just individual elements.

More broadly, second-order thinking considers indirect effects: The second-order consequences of that policy weren't obvious until years later.

A second-order problem arises from attempts to solve the first one.
