octal

Zero through seven

Octal refers to a base-8 number system using digits 0 through 7.

Used in computing as a compact way to represent binary data, since each octal digit corresponds to exactly three binary digits: The Unix file permission 755 is octal notation.

Less common now than hexadecimal, but still appears in legacy systems and certain programming contexts.
