nuclease

Gene-cutting enzyme

A nuclease is an enzyme that breaks down nucleic acids (DNA or RNA) by cleaving the bonds between nucleotides.

Nucleases are essential tools in molecular biology for cutting genetic material at specific sites: Restriction nucleases allow scientists to splice genes from one organism into another.

Some nucleases cut from the ends of a strand (exonucleases), others cut within it (endonucleases).
