nicking

Making small cuts

Nicking is stealing, especially small items or petty theft—British slang that remains common: Someone's nicked my phone.

To nick also means to make a small cut or notch: I nicked myself shaving.

In British slang, to get nicked is to be arrested: He got nicked for shoplifting.

The noun nick appears in in the nick of time—at the last possible moment.
