gender markers
Masculine/feminine language signals
Gender markers are official designations of sex or gender on legal documents such as birth certificates, passports, and driver's licenses.
The term appears most often in discussions of changing these designations: Some states now allow nonbinary gender markers on IDs.
The phrase also refers more broadly to any indicator of gender—clothing, pronouns, honorifics—but the legal-document sense dominates current usage.
