no-man's-land

Between opposing trenches

No-man's-land is territory that belongs to no one or that no one controls.

The term gained prominence from World War I, describing the deadly strip between opposing trenches—ground neither side could safely occupy.

It extends to any contested or undefined zone: The border region was a bureaucratic no-man's-land.

Figuratively, it describes situations falling between established categories: Her proposal exists in a no-man's-land between art and commerce.
