border zone
Edge territory region
A border zone is the area along a boundary between two regions, countries, or territories.
The term emphasizes the transitional nature of such spaces—not quite one place or the other: Residents of the border zone often speak both languages.
Border zones may have special legal or economic status, with different rules than either adjacent territory.
Figuratively, a border zone is any ambiguous space between defined categories: The film exists in a border zone between documentary and fiction.
