nanas

Moms' moms, informally

Nanas is an informal, affectionate term for grandmothers, the plural of nana.

It belongs to the family of reduplicated nursery words like mama and papa that children produce early in language acquisition.

The term remains common in adult speech as a familiar way to refer to one's grandmother or grandmothers generally: Both my nanas came to my graduation.

In some contexts, nanas is also a playful or childish plural of banana.
