drill sergeants

Recruits' harsh trainers

Drill sergeants are noncommissioned officers responsible for training military recruits, particularly during basic training.

They enforce discipline, teach military skills, and transform civilians into soldiers through rigorous physical conditioning and instruction.

The stereotypical drill sergeant shouts commands inches from recruits' faces: The drill sergeant made us do pushups until we dropped.

The term extends figuratively to anyone who demands strict compliance: My personal trainer is a real drill sergeant.
